Morro Rock. Known as the “Gibraltor of the Pacific,” Morro Rock was formed around 23 million years ago as the plug of a long-extinct volcano. Morro Rock is the last of the Nine Sisters-nine volcanic plugs that run in a line from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. Named “El Morro” in 1542 by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Morro Rock’s height of 576 feet made it an important navigational aid for more than 300 years. Today, the “Rock” is a bird sanctuary and home to nesting Peregrine Falcons, not to mention a unique landscape feature and area landmark that has been the subject of many artists and photographers work.
